Ingredients

Servings4

Yields 4 servings

  • (2 cups) all-purpose flour
  • (1 tablespoon) baking powder
  • (1/2 teaspoons) salt
  • (1/4 teaspoons) black pepper
  • (1/2 cups) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • (1 cup) shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • (1/4 cups) chopped fresh chives
  • (1/4 cups) chopped fresh parsley
  • (3/4 cups) milk
  • (1) large egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. 1

    Preheat the oven to 400°F (200 °C).

  2. 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. Add 2/4 teaspoon salt.

  3. 3

Add 1/2 cup cold, cubed unsalted butter to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  4. 4

Stir in 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese, 1/4 cup chopped fresh chives, and 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley until evenly distributed.

  5. 5

Make a well in the center of the mixture and pour in 3/4 cup milk. Stir gently until just combined; do not overmix.

  6. 6

Turn the dough onto a floured surface and gently knead it a few times until it comes together. Pat it into a 1-inch thick round disc.

  7. 7

Cut the disc into 8 wedges and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  8. 8

Brush the tops of the scones with the beaten egg to give them a golden color while baking.

  9. 9

Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the scones are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  10. 10

Remove from the oven and let cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.
