Yields 4 servings

  • (8 oz) elbow macaroni
  • (2 cups) shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • (1/2 cups) grated Parmesan cheese
  • (3 cups) milk
  • (1/4 cups) unsalted butter
  • (1/4 cups) all-purpose flour
  • (1/2 tsp) garlic powder
  • (1/2 tsp) onion powder
  • (1/2 tsp) mustard powder
  • (1/4 tsp) black pepper
  • (1/4 tsp) salt
  • (1/2 cups) breadcrumbs (optional)

Instructions

  1. 1

Cook 8 oz elbow macaroni according to package instructions until al dente, then drain and set aside.

  2. 2

In a large saucepan, melt 1/4 cup unsalted butter over medium heat.

  3. 3

Whisk in 1/4 cup all-purpose flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until bubbly and slightly golden.

  4. 4

Gradually whisk in 3 cups milk and continue to whisk until the mixture thickens, about 5-7 minutes.

  5. 5

Stir in 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese, 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese, 1/2 tsp garlic powder, 1/2 tsp onion powder, 1/2 tsp mustard powder, 1/4 tsp black pepper, and 1/4 tsp salt until the cheese is melted and the sauce is smooth.

  6. 6

Add the cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until well combined.

  7. 7

If desired, transfer the mac and cheese to a baking dish, sprinkle 1/2 cup breadcrumbs on top, and broil for 2-3 minutes until the breadcrumbs are golden brown.

  8. 8

    Serve hot.
