Ingredients

Servings4

Yields 1 loaf

  • (4 cups) all-purpose flour
  • (1 teaspoon) baking soda
  • (1 teaspoon) salt
  • (1 3/4 cups) buttermilk

Instructions

  1. 1

    Preheat the oven to 425°F (220 °C).

  2. 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine 4 cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking soda, and 1 teaspoon salt. Mix well until evenly combined.

  3. 3

Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in 1 3/4 cups buttermilk.

  4. 4

Using a wooden spoon, stir the mixture until a soft dough forms. It may be slightly sticky; do not overmix.

  5. 5

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently knead it for about 1 minute until it comes together. Shape it into a round loaf about 1 1/2 inches thick.

  6. 6

Place the loaf on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Using a sharp knife, cut a deep cross into the top of the loaf.

  7. 7

Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

  8. 8

Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes before slicing.
