Ingredients
Yields 4 servings
- (2 cups) granulated sugar
- (1 cup) water
- (1/2 cups) light corn syrup
- (1/4 teaspoons) food coloring (optional)
- (1/2 teaspoons) flavored extract (like vanilla or peppermint)
- Wooden skewers or string
- Glass jar or container
Instructions
- 1
In a medium saucepan, combine 2 cups granulated sugar, 1 cup water, and 1/2 cup light corn syrup over medium heat.
- 2
Stir the mixture until the sugar completely dissolves, then bring it to a boil without stirring.
- 3
Once boiling, let the mixture cook for about 5 minutes or until it reaches 240°F (115 °C) on a candy thermometer.
- 4
Remove the saucepan from heat and let it cool for a few minutes. If desired, add 1/4 teaspoon food coloring and 1/2 teaspoon flavored extract, stirring gently to combine.
- 5
Prepare your skewers or string by dipping them in the sugar solution, then rolling them in granulated sugar to coat. This helps the crystals to form later.
- 6
Place the skewers or string vertically in a glass jar or container, ensuring they do not touch the sides or bottom.
- 7
Pour the sugar syrup into the jar, covering the skewers or string completely. Let it sit undisturbed at room temperature for about 5-7 days to allow crystals to form.
- 8
After a week, carefully remove the skewers or string from the jar, and let them dry for a few hours before enjoying your homemade rock candy.
